The coastal town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, known for its vibrant food scene and artistic charm, has seen a notable business transition. Carmel Belle, a beloved café and market in the heart of downtown, has officially been sold. Owners Meghan Rasmussen and Lokman Balaban have passed the business to Jeff and Chantal Nelson, ensuring its continued success.

Carmel Belle has been a staple in the local dining scene, known for its commitment to fresh, high-quality ingredients and a menu that reflects California’s farm-to-table culture.

Since opening, it has been a favorite among both locals and visitors, offering a relaxed atmosphere and exceptional food. The café is known for its organic salads, hearty grain bowls, artisanal sandwiches, and sustainably sourced meats and cheeses.

With a focus on seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, Carmel Belle has built a reputation for simple, high-quality dining.

Beyond its menu, the café has served as a gathering place, offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It has been a go-to spot for morning coffee, casual lunches, and a break from exploring Carmel’s picturesque streets.

Located in the Doud Arcade—home to craft studios and boutique shops—it sits in a prime downtown location surrounded by art galleries, restaurants, and unique retail stores.

Under Meghan and Lokman’s leadership, Carmel Belle built a loyal following and earned a reputation for excellence in both food and service. Their dedication to using organic, sustainable ingredients and providing top-notch hospitality helped shape the business into what it is today.

After years of success, including navigating the challenges of the pandemic, they made the decision to sell, ready to pursue new ventures while ensuring the café continues to thrive.  Their leadership was instrumental in ensuring success through the pandemic and coming out on the other side a better and stronger business.  They plan to spend more time with the kids and family.

New owners Jeff and Chantal Nelson bring experience and enthusiasm to the business and are longtime hospitality professionals. The Nelsons, who live in Carmel Valley, currently operate a catering business called Rising to the Occasions, and Jeff has held restaurant management positions at The Quail and Bernardus Lodge. Most recently he was food and beverage manager at Bayonet & Black Horse golf club in Seaside.

“We’re going to keep it the same and build on what’s been created here,” says Nelson, adding he hopes to expand the offering of baked goods at some point.

The sale of Carmel Belle reflects the strength of Carmel’s restaurant scene and the demand for high-quality, community-oriented dining. With this transition, the café is poised to remain a downtown staple, continuing to serve both locals and visitors with the same dedication to quality and hospitality that has defined it for years.

Congratulations to all involved in the sale of Carmel Belle, and best wishes to Jeff and Chantal Nelson as they embark on this exciting new chapter in one of California’s most picturesque coastal towns!
